Automotive Climate Control

Automatic Climate Control is an air conditioning system that maintains the manually pre-set interior temperature of your car at the desired level. Explore and familiarize yourself with the theories and systems of Automotive AC and heating system malfunctions, manual and electronic climate controls and safety.

Students who successfully complete both AUMT 1041 and AUMT 1045 (two semesters) will be awarded an Occupational Skills Certificate.  Classes are taught at the Ball High Automotive Center.  A classroom set of textbooks is included.

This program is eligible for a payment plan or a TPEG grant.

 

Diesel Engine Testing & Repair

This program provides students seeking a career in diesel technology the skills necessary to successfully enter the workforce. This high demand career training provides instruction in engine measuring tools, and the principles of operation for major engine components. Students are briefed on the materials needed to take the ASE test of Diesel Engines. 

Students who successfully complete both DEMR 1011 and DEMR 2012 (two semesters) will be awarded an Occupational Skills Certificate.  Classes are taught at the Ball High Automotive Center. A classroom set of textbooks is included.

This program is eligible for a payment plan or a TPEG grant.

 

Automotive Diesel Technician Level 1 Cert

This Galveston College CE program, which is comprised of two Occupational Skills awards that combine for a Level One Certification, is taught at the Ball High School automotive and diesel technology lab. It is open to interested students of all ages. Students who complete both courses of Diesel Engine Testing and Repair and both courses in Automotive Climate Controls earn a Level One Certification from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

EPA guidelines for refrigerant replacement are presented. Classes are taught at the Ball High Automotive Center. Students must wear PPE.

Eyelash Extension

Our new Eyelash Extension cosmetology program provides students an overview of the skills and knowledge of the fundamentals necessary for the field of eyelash extensions, according to the safety and sanitation requirements of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The successful completer of all three courses in the program will earn an Occupational Skills Award. This program prepares students to take the Eyelash Extension licensure exam for State of Texas, separate fees. 

3 Course Block- Students must register for all three courses, CSME-1007, CSME-1008, CSME-1009 for the program. 

The program is eligible for a payment Plan or TPEG grant.

Successful completers will be able to demonstrate competencies as they relate to the application of eyelash extensions; utilize correct terminology related to eyelash extensions; and exhibit workplace competencies.

This course provides the student with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to safely and effectively apply eyelash extensions according to the safety and sanitation requirements of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. 

Successful completers will be able to determine the proper safety procedures and client protection during the eyelash extension procedure; identify the various eye shapes; determine the appropriate application procedure; apply knowledge of adverse client reactions to products.

This course provides the student with the skills necessary to perform client services using current techniques and business practices. Successful completers will be able to identify current management and business practices relative to cosmetology and eyelash extensions; and apply knowledge and skills using appropriate techniques and specialized tools to complete a full eyelash extension service.

Pipefitting

Train to be a pipefitter helper. Students who complete National Center for Construction Education and Research, (NCCER), Core and Level 1 can earn an Occupational Skills Award along with NCCER credentials. This program is eligible for TPEG and payment plans.

The NCCER Core Curriculum presents the safe use of hand tools, power tools, rigging, and power equipment used in plumbing trade for installation of different plumbing systems. This class is held at our Applied Technology Center Campus.

Course requisites: Students must register for both PFPB 1050 and PFPB 1008 

The entry-level NCCER Pipefitting Level 1 training presents mathematical operations necessary to calculate laying lengths of pipe fittings for fabrication. Students do hands-on projects in the shop fabricating pipe layouts and the basics of the pipefitting are presented. This class is held at our Applied Technology Center Campus.

Course requisites: Students must register for both PFPB 1050 and PFPB 1008 

Continuation of pipe fabrication, rigging, pipe hangers and supports, blueprint reading, standards and specifications, and trade math. 

Successful completer should be able to fabricate socket and butt weld pipes; install pipe hangers and supports; sketch isometric views of piping assemblies; interpret piping standards and specifications; use measuring devices.

Welding 

The Welding Technology program at Galveston College is designed to provide hands-on training on the same equipment used by business and industry. Students are trained to perform welding skills in all positions and are able to acquire knowledge and experience in welding, layout and fitting skills in order to be prepared for careers in gas welding, arc welding, specialty welding and/or other areas of welding.

The non-credit classes are taught at our Applied Technology Campus. Classes over $500 are eligible for a payment plan.

A study of industrial blueprints. Emphasis placed on terminology, symbols, graphic description, and welding processes. Includes systems of measurement and industry standards. Also includes interpretation of plans and drawings used by industry to facilitate field application and production.

End-of-Course Outcomes: Define terms and abbreviations; interpret views, lines, dimensions, detail drawings and welding symbols; identify structural shapes; demonstrate the proper use of measuring devices; calculate dimensions; and develop bill of materials.

Principles of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), including setup, GTAW equipment. Instruction in various positions and joint designs.

Successful completer should be able to describe various joint designs; describe safety rules and equipment; and describe the effects of welding parameters in GTAW; weld various structural materials. 

Basic welding techniques using some of the following processes: Oxy-fuel welding (OFW) and cutting, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).

End-of-Course Outcomes: Demonstrate machine set-up and complete welds and cutting operations; demonstrate basic shop safety; identify types of consumables used in welding processes; identify various welding and cutting practices; and demonstrate proper joint preparation techniques.

An introduction to the shielded metal arc welding process. Emphasis placed on power sources, electrode selection, and various joint designs.

End-of-Course Outcomes: Select electrodes and amperage settings for various thicknesses of materials and welding positions; define principles of arc welding; explain electrode classifications; perform SMAW operations utilizing various positions electrodes and joint designs.

Brazing

HVAC/R Technicians want to improve your skills? Would you like to learn to do repairs around the house? Students will learn about different copper tubing processes. Cut, flare, swadge and braze.

Includes materials and certificates. Class taught at the Galveston College Applied Technology Center, ATC Building Two, 7626 Broadway, Galveston, TX 77554. 

Water Distribution/Operations

Get your Continuing Education, (CE), hours covered by taking Water Distribution. This course covers sources and characteristics of water. Includes water distribution systems, water mains, valves and hydrants, storage, meters and services, pump installation and operations, maintenance of customer meters, and corrosion control.

The successful completer should be able to evaluate public health issues related to water distribution; and describe and identify distribution systems, hydraulic and water mains, and services.

Course is 2 1/2 days or 20 hours (2 CEUs). 

This course includes instruction in the production, treatment, and distribution of potable water. Upon successful completion of Basic Water Works Operations training, participants have exposure to techniques that will allow for the proper operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems. The course tuition includes one attempt a the state certification examination Class D License* through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

The fee for the state certification exam is non-refundable and non-transferable. Eligibility for this exam is dependent upon acceptance by TCEQ. 

This course in wastewater collection and treatment includes a brief overview of the water cycle. Topics include: activated sludge process; alternative and advanced treatment; characteristics of wastewater; flow measurements; lift (pumping) stations; ponds, disinfection and safety procedures; preliminary treatment; records and reports; sedimentation and fixed-film processes collection systems; biological treatment of wastewater; goals of wastewater treatment; the law and sources of pretreatment of domestic wastes; water cycle and water reuse. Also included are Texas' rules and regulations for licensing of wastewater system operators.

The course tuition includes one attempt a the state certification examination Class D License* through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). About Our Payment Plans:

Galveston College offers you the ability to pay for courses over time with a payment plan.  This is done with a partnership with NELNET.  The payment plan itself called FACTS.  Information about this plan can be found in the GC Whitecaps Portal. This is not a loan program. You have no debt, there are no interest or finance charges assessed, and there is no credit check. The cost to budget your interest-free monthly payment plan is a $30 per term nonrefundable FACTS Enrollment Fee.  You may budget in the following ways:

  1. Automatic Bank Payment (ACH)—ACH payments authorized FACTS to process directly with your financial institution. It is simply a bank-to-bank transfer of funds that you have pre-approved for your expenses at Galveston College. Payments may be made from either your checking or savings account. Payments are processed on the 5th of each month and will continue until the balance is paid in full.
  2. Credit Card Option—Paying with your credit card gives you the option of taking advantage of any bonus programs that may be offered by your credit card company. Your monthly payment will be automatically charged to the credit card you designate. Payments will be charged on the 5th of each month until the balance is paid in full

How to sign up a payment plan

  1. To set up a payment plan you must first be registered in a course. Upon registration you should be sent an automatic email with your password to the portal. If you do not get this, please contact the help desk or visit the service center in room R-120.
  2. You must have 50% of your course balance + a $30 non-fundable enrollment fee to make up your deposit
  3. Login to Whitecaps Portal (see attachment for how to Log into Whitecaps Portal)
  • Click on the Quick Link Labeled “FACTS payment plan
  • Select proceed to processor
  • Follow the prompts to complete agreement

 

Enrollment Periods:

Enrollment periods will affect the # of payments you are eligible for.  The enrollment period for CE courses is on a quarter basis.  If you have questions about enrollment dates do not hesitate to contact us. The dates listed below are general range dates and are impacted by which business day the dates fall on.  If a date falls on a weekend the cut off will be the next business day.

Missed payments:  Should you have insufficient funds when your account is drafted, FACTS/Nelnet will make a 2nd attempt to draft your account the following week. You will be accessed a late fee for each insufficient draft. This returned payment fee will be deducted from the account you have provided.

ALL COURSES MUST BE PAID FOR IN FULL UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE.  STUDENTS WHO HAVE BALANCES OR NON-PAYMENT UPON THE END OF A COURSE WILL NOT BE GIVEN CREDIT FOR THE COURSE THEY HAVE TAKEN, AND WILL NOT BE APPROVED FOR ANY EXAMS, OR HAVE CERTIFICATIONS ISSUED.  A HOLD WILL BE PLACED ON THE STUDENT ACCOUNT.

 

The Whitecaps Portal can be accessed from any page on the Galveston College Website. It is located in the Whitecaps Toolbox on the top right of each page. In order to log in, you will need a username and password. Your username is GC plus your seven-digit student ID number and your initial password was sent to you in a separate email.

Senior Discounts:

Classes listed with an “*” are eligible for a 50% senior discount for those over the age of 65 and who live on Galveston Island.  Call the CE office at 409-944-1344 to receive a Senior Discount Code to apply at registration.

Class Cancellations, Room Changes, and Rescheduling:

Courses with low enrollment prior to a start date are canceled prior to the start date. Students will be notified by phone or email when a class they are enrolled in has been canceled; however, we are sometimes unable to reach everyone. A refund of 100% is automatically processed upon cancellation of classes. Please allow up to 2 weeks for your refund to be processed.

To help avoid cancellations please register and pay AT LEAST A WEEK PRIOR TO THE START DATE, and encourage your friends to register with you. Occasionally, canceled courses are rescheduled for a later start date, and you will be notified by phone when the opportunity presents itself. In the event of a classroom change notice of the room change will be posted on the Continuing Education doors and the classroom that was originally listed.

Refunds:

Cancellations or withdrawals made at least 1 business day prior to the start of class will be 100%. Refund requests should be made in person or by phone to 409-944-1344. Refund requests must be received during normal business hours and at least one business day prior to the start date of the class. When a class is canceled you will automatically be refunded the full course amount. There are NO REFUNDS GIVEN AFTER A COURSE HAS BEGUN. There are NO REFUNDS for ED2GO online courses.

Smoke-Free Campus:

Galveston College is a smoke-free campus. Smoking (including e-cigs) is strictly prohibited in all buildings on the campus grounds and parking areas.

Classroom Conduct:

Students are expected to conduct themselves in the classroom and/or laboratory in a manner that is conducive to good academic progress. Failure to comply with the lawful direction of a faculty member, teaching assistant or instructor may be a disruption for all students enrolled in the class. Disruptive conduct is considered a serious offense. Faculty reserve the right to remove a student from a class for just cause. Students removed may be referred to the VP of Student Services for disciplinary action.

Cell Phone Use:

Cell phone use is strictly prohibited during all class/lab sessions. In an emergency, please step outside to avoid disruption.

FERPA:

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), was established to protect the privacy rights of all students. FERPA specifies the types of student information which can be released to the public without a student’s expressed consent and specifies the persons and agencies that may receive other information, which according the FERPA, a college may release to the public without a student’s permission and is referred to as “Directory Information.” The information included in the FERPA definition includes name, address, telephone, date and place of birth, degrees earned, date, major, and field of study, academic classification, dates of attendance, number of semester hours in progress and attained to date, previous high school and college attended, and weight and height of members of athletic teams. Students may request that Galveston College withhold their directory information from the general public. To do so, students must fill out the appropriate form with the Admissions Office.

Record of Completion and CEU’s:

Nationally recognized CEU’s may be awarded on certain approved occupation-related courses. One CEU is awarded for every 10 contact hours. Most courses are given a Certificate of Completion. It is up to the individual student to see if these courses are eligible for CEU’s.

Request for Records and Replacement Certificates:

CE records are only kept for 2 years, digital copies may be available if needed. Please fill out a record’s request form and allow up to 2 weeks for it to be processed. Reprints of certificates cost $10 and can only be done if a digital copy is on file.
