There are good times and not-so-good times. Galveston College is currently facing the latter after its fifth straight loss, which put them in a third-place tie with Wharton County Junior College and seven games remaining in the regular season.
After winning five of six games to start the first half of April, the Whitecaps (21-23 overall, 13-15 in conference) dropped their next five games, including a four-game sweep by Blinn College (35-10, 23-5), which is in first place in the NJCAA DI Region 14 South Conference.
“We hit a rough patch and it came at an inopportune time against a very talented team like Blinn College,” said GC Baseball Head Coach, Ryne Edmondson. “It won’t get any easier. We have second-place San Jacinto College up next and we close out the regular season against Wharton County Junior College. We have our work cut out for us, but I have confidence in our team.”
GC is tied for third place with WCJC (21-23, 13-15) and it could come down to their four-game series at the end of the regular season April 28-May 2 to decide the third-place spot. The top four teams from the conference qualify for the regional tournament in May.
Before the season series finale, Edmondson and the Whitecaps will have a chance to gain back some ground on Thursday at 6 p.m. when they visit second-place San Jacinto College-North (28-14, 20-7). The three-game series will wrap up on Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 and 4:30 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public. The Ravens lead the season series, 3-1.
In its most recent games, GC lost 6-0 and 13-6 against conference-leading BC on April 18.
Whitecaps freshman lefty Bennett Springer pitched five innings in the first game of the twin bill and allowed six runs on five hits, and struck out a pair of Buccaneers batters. Springer was charged with the loss and dropped to 5-4 on the season.
In the second game, GC controlled the first half of the game, taking a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning. BC rallied with two runs in the top of the fifth and four in the sixth frame to take a 6-4 lead.
The Whitecaps got one run back in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5 and later 7-6 in the seventh.
The Bucs dashed the home team’s hope of a comeback when they scored six runs in the eighth inning to claim a 13-6 victory over the Whitecaps.
GC sophomore lefthanded reliever Cooper Corkrean replaced starter Trent Barnes and pitched 2.1 innings of relief, giving up six runs on four hits. Corkrean was credited with the loss and evened his record to 1-1.
