GALVESTON, Texas (March 28, 2025) – Galveston College was on the verge of extending its losing streak Wednesday until a late-inning surge helped the Whitecaps rally for three runs to defeat Wharton County Junior College, 4-1, salvaging a doubleheader split at Bernard Davis Field.
“It was a close game and either team could have won it, but I have confidence in our players and they came through in the clutch,” said Whitecaps Head Baseball Coach, Ryne Edmondson. “It was a much-needed win, and this will give our players some additional confidence going into the last game of the series against Wharton on Sunday.”
GC improved to 15-16 overall and remains in fourth place in the South Conference with an 8-8 record. The twin bill split dropped WCJC to 14-18 and 6-10, respectively, and is in fifth place behind the Whitecaps.
The Whitecaps will wrap up their three-game series on the road against the Pioneers on Sunday at 6 p.m.
After dropping the series opener to WCJC, 5-2, both teams engaged in a scoreless stalemate for the first four and a half innings of play. GC eventually broke the tie and got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the fifth to take a slim 1-0 lead.
Not to be outdone, the Pioneers countered with a run of their own in the sixth to knot the game at 1-all.
The Whitecaps rallied with three runs in their half of the eighth inning to retake the lead and win the game, 4-1.
GC starting freshman right-handed hurler Hayden Capers pitched 5.1 innings, allowed only one run and six hits, and struck out five opposing batters to claim the victory. Win the win, Capers improved his record to 2-1. Whitecaps freshman right-handed pitcher, Gavin Hickman, tossed one inning of scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season.
For WCJC, Noah O’Farrell was tagged with the loss and dropped to 2-4 on the year. O’Farrell tossed 3.2 innings of relief, gave up three runs on two hits and struck out five Whitecaps.
