Have you ever considered a career as a water or wastewater operator for a treatment plant?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects for operators are expected to grow at a rate of 8 percent through 2022, with a wage of $16 to $22 per hour, depending on the municipality.

Many operators are nearing retirement and there is a shortage of workers to meet the demand, said Dr. Rebecca Stout, director of continuing education at Galveston College.

“If you are looking for steady work with good pay and benefits and good economic stability, this is a great opportunity to start a new career,” Stout said. “After working in the industry for two years, you can progress to additional levels of certification.”

To begin their careers, individuals must first obtain a D license. Requirements include the following:

  • high school diploma or GED and
  • completion of one of the following core classes:
    • Basic Water Works Operation or
    • Basic Wastewater Operation.

No work experience is needed, as on-the-job training is typically provided by most employers.

Basic Water Works will be offered from June 18-22 from 6-10 p.m. at Galveston College.  Selected individuals may qualify for funding at Workforce Solutions.
