Galveston College administration, board of regents, foundation board members, donors, faculty and staff gathered on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023 for the Topping Off Ceremony of the college’s new three-story, 64,000-square-foot Health Sciences Education Center.
The Topping Off Ceremony is a time-honored construction tradition which celebrates the last structural beam going into position on a building project.
The groundbreaking for the new $30 million building was held in June 2022 and steel beams were first erected in late November. The new building is scheduled for completion in fall 2023.
“The Topping Off Ceremony marks a significant milestone in the Health Sciences Education Center construction project,” said Galveston College President, W. Myles Shelton, Ed.D. “We have come a long way since the groundbreaking last summer. It’s exciting to see the structural framework and imagine what the new Health Sciences Education Center will look like, as well as all the wonderful opportunities this facility will bring our students and community when the project is completed in the fall.”
During the ceremony, Galveston College Foundation board members, regents, donors and Allied Health faculty signed the beam to commemorate the construction milestone before it was raised into place by crane to the top of the highest point of the Health Sciences Education Center.
“This ceremony brings us one step closer to completing the Health Sciences Education Center and represents a promising tomorrow for our current and future students,” said Galveston College Foundation Chair, Keith McFatridge. “The Galveston College Board of Regents and the Galveston College Foundation Board remain committed to continue fundraising to off-set the expense of the new construction on campus. This wonderful facility will come to life and be bustling with faculty and student activity before we know it.”
