It only took five innings for Galveston College to dismantle and shut out Coastal Bend College 10-0 on Thursday afternoon at Bernard Davis Field and extend their winning streak to five games.
With the victory, the Whitecaps improved to 16-7 overall and 5-0 in the Region 14 South Conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I. GC is currently in first place, one game ahead of Blinn College (4-1) and two games in front of Wharton County Junior College (3-2) in conference play. CBC (0-5) dropped to last place with the loss against GC.
“Zachary Fetchel pitched a solid game and our guys gave him a lot of support defensively and offensively,” said Whitecaps Head Baseball Coach, Brian Reinke. “We have a young group of players who are still learning and getting better day by day, and we’re seeing some of the results of practicing and playing hard.”
Whitecaps freshman right-handed pitcher Zachary Fetchel (4-0) hurled a six-hit complete five-inning game to register his fourth win of the season. Fetchel struck out three Cougars and walked two.
GC’s offense knocked out CBC sophomore righthander Garrett Nail after scoring three runs in the second inning and another pair of runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
The Whitecaps unleashed for five runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning against Cougars reliever Roberto Perez to complete the shutout, 10-0.
GC’s offense was spearheaded by leadoff hitter and center fielder, Kyeler Thompson, who went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park grand slam and six RBIs. Catcher Cameran Christ also went 2-for-3, scored one run and produced three more, while right fielder Saul Soto went 2-for-2 with a walk and one run scored. Third baseman Jacob Bulcroft and first baseman MD Conner each went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Whitecaps will pay a return visit to the Cougars for a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 and 5 p.m. before returning home on Sunday to face South Suburban College at 3 p.m. at Bernard Davis Field, located at 81st Street and Frank Guisti Drive in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
