After Galveston College rallied to overcome a one-run deficit to win the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader against Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 9-1, the Whitecaps were outlasted by the Seahawks, 7-6, in the nightcap.

“Lamar State College pitched us well for the first few innings in the opener, but we came alive and never looked back to win it,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “They pitched us just as well in the second game, but this time around we rallied a little too late, we ran out of outs and came up shy. One run can make all the difference in a game and we let this one get away.”

The doubleheader split sent No. 15-ranked GC (31-10 overall, 9-3 in conference) to second place, and allowed San Jacinto College-South (32-18, 11-3) to slip into the South Conference lead.

In the first game, LSCPA held a slim 1-0 lead through three innings, before GC knotted up the contest 1-all in the fourth.

The Whitecaps took the lead an inning later when GC’s offense exploded for six runs and added another pair of scores in the sixth to win the game, 9-1.

Whitecaps freshman pitcher Jenna Johnston tossed a two-hitter in six innings and struck out 10 Seahawks batters to win her 17th game of the year.

Designated player Karlie Barba and left fielder Jessica Munro each homered in the first game. Barba went 3-for-4 with three hits and two RBIs, while Munro went 1-for-4. Right fielder Emily Parks went 2-for-2, scored once and drove in a pair of runs.

In the second game, both teams went run-for-run, playing to a 2-2 tie through the first five innings.

The Seahawks took a one-run lead, 3-2, in the sixth and unloaded for four runs in the seventh to take a five-run, 7-2 advantage over the home team.

The Whitecaps answered run-for-run with a four-run inning of their own, but came up one run short and fell 7-6 to the Seahawks.

GC shortstop Ella Herrewig, catcher Brooke Escalona, Barba and Parks each homered in the second game.

Whitecaps freshman pitcher Brynn Glidewell gave up two runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work before she was relieved by Johnston, who allowed five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. Johnston was charged with the loss to drop to 17-5 on the season.

GC goes on the road this week and will visit Blinn College for a twin bill on Wednesday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. The Whitecaps return home for a doubleheader on Saturday against Coastal Bend College at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Lassie League Complex, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
