Laura Loera's educational journey exemplifies the transformative power of higher education, guided by her unwavering determination and supported by Galveston College. From military service to navigating full-time work and academic pursuits, Loera's path reflects the resilience and opportunities found within GC’s hallways.

After high school, Loera enlisted in the Air Force, where she honed her skills as a dental assistant. It was during her service that Loera's passion for learning was ignited, prompting her to explore the possibilities of higher education.

Upon completing her military service, Loera embarked on her academic journey, earning an associate degree in general studies. However, her thirst for knowledge and desire to break barriers as a first-generation college student didn’t let her stop there.

“My friends always joke that I’m going to be in college forever,” said Loera. “As a first-generation college student, I know that my education can change everything.”

With a background in the medical field, Loera discovered her calling in radiography and tailored her education accordingly at GC. She liked that radiography “wasn’t constrained to one path” and how GC’s Radiography program offered many avenues for students to continue their careers after completion.

Despite initially being placed on the alternate list for the highly competitive Radiography program, Loera remained undeterred. She formulated backup plans while awaiting acceptance, eventually receiving the call she had been waiting for.

GC became Loera's beacon of opportunity, fostering an environment where her perseverance thrived. Supported by dedicated Allied Health professors committed to student success, Loera flourished in her first year. She maximized the college's financial resources, securing scholarships to ease the financial strain of her transition to part-time work.

Throughout her journey, Loera faced challenges, including managing her time effectively and adjusting her budget. Before joining the Radiography program, she worked full-time as a new patient service specialist at the University of Texas Medical Center and had recently purchased a house. Transitioning to part-time work as a full-time student was facilitated by GC's resources and the scholarships Loera was awarded, allowing her to focus on her studies.

As a second-year Radiography program student this fall, she remains grateful for the opportunities afforded to her, and Loera’s advice to future students echoes her own journey—embrace challenges, pursue passions, and never lose sight of your dreams.
