It was an active summer for Galveston College’s TRIO Upward Bound, a federally funded college preparation program, which provided services for 70 students during the past few months.

GC’s TRIO Upward Bound program students participated in academic courses that challenged them to gain further understanding of the classes they will be taking at Ball High School during the next academic year. UB offered courses in Algebra, Explorations in Literature, Creative Coding, Data Science, Forensic Science, College Readiness and Financial Literacy, Basketball and Zumba, to name a few.

The students had the opportunity to hear from special guest speakers from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Family Service Center, University of St. Thomas, and Galveston College STEM Program, who provided presentations about academic programs within universities, coping strategies for stress and mindfulness. Participants also attended workshops on financial literacy, networking, comparing colleges and admissions requirements, preparing for college campus visits, and scholarship/grant processes.

The program also provided academic support services, with assistance from UB learning facilitators, instructors, academic coordinator and director, to 16 GC TRIO UB early admission students with a cooperative relationship with Galveston Career Connect. The students had their tuition and fees paid for by GCC while participating in academic support services and academic courses, which challenged and prepared them for the SAT and ACT.

At the conclusion of a busy summer schedule, GC’s UB participants were recognized for their academic achievement in their summer courses, leadership and successful completion of the TRIO UB academic and summer components for 2022-2023 at an awards reception on July 6, 2023.

In addition, a few UB students participated in internships with the Family Service Center and Young Gardener Program & EcoRise summer internship.

The graduates from the Ball High and UB Class of 2023 will be attending Galveston College, University of St. Thomas, Texas Tech University, University of Incarnate Word, and Sam Houston State University in fall 2023. Students were awarded numerous scholarships and grants, and recognized for their academic accomplishments over the last four years as participants in the college’s UB program.
