Galveston College will host history professor Andrés Reséndez, who will present “A Disastrous Sixteenth-Century Expedition on the Coast of Texas” during the My Dream Speaker Lecture Series at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023, at the college’s Abe and Annie Seibel Wing. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Reséndez, who was raised in Mexico City, is a history professor at UC Davis and his lecture will focus on the subject of his scholarly book, “A Land So Strange: The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca – the Extraordinary Tale of a Shipwrecked Spaniard Who Walked Across America in the Sixteenth Century.”
Reséndez specializes in early European exploration and the colonization of the Americas, the U.S-Mexico border region, and the early history of the Pacific, particularly the pioneering voyages of discovery and the biological exchanges across the largest ocean on Earth.
In 2017, he was awarded the Bancroft Prize from Columbia University for his book, “The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America.”
Reséndez earned his bachelor’s degree in International Relations from El Colegio de México and his doctorate from the University of Chicago. Prior to teaching at UC Davis, he taught at Yale and the University of Helsinki.
