With a big smile and revved up to begin her second year at Galveston College, Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program student Trina Woodard was sworn in Friday morning in the Seibel Wing as the new Galveston College Student Government Association president.
“This is exciting to me and through SGA I hope to give more students a voice,” said Woodard. “Going through college and navigating the college experience as an older student, there’s a couple of things I wish I was a little bit more vocal about during my first experience. It’s a good way to network and I get to see what’s on their minds, how we can do better and improve the college experience.”
Last year, the 39-year-old Odessa native enrolled at Galveston College and began her journey in the DMS program. She quickly became actively involved in student activities through SGA and was elected vice president. Woodard is also a work-study for GC’s Building Bridges to Success (BBS) program.
BBS is a TRIO Student Support Services program, funded by the United States Department of Education, and provides academic and student support services to GC students who are first-generation, low-income or disabled.
“My experience at Galveston College has been amazing,” said Woodard. “I became a member of BBS and that really opened up different aspects of the college experience for me. I even became a work study for BBS and they nominated me for SGA. They’ve pushed me to another level.”
