Galveston College softball pitching duo Jenna Johnston and Karlie Barba hurled two complete games and allowed only five hits and one run combined to lead the No. 12-ranked Whitecaps to a doubleheader sweep of Alvin Community College on Wednesday in a conference matchup at the Lassie League Complex’s Carter Field.

Freshman righthander Johnston permitted one run on a pair of hits and struck out six batters en route to a 6-1 victory over the Dolphins in the first game of the twinbill and sophomore righty Barba tossed a 6-0 shutout, scattering three hits while striking out four. Johnston improved to 15-3 and Barba to 10-3 on the season with the victories.

With the sweep, GC’s record improved to 28-7 overall, 6-2 in conference play, to keep pace with NJCAA DI Region 14 South Conference rival San Jacinto College (25-15, 7-1), who holds a one-game lead.

“Jenna and Karlie have come through for us this season and have given us some great outings, and the results are there,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “They pitched good, solid games against Alvin. I’m very proud of them for their performance against ACC and how much they have grown this season. They have provided the team with some good leadership on- and off-the-field, and it shows in how we’re playing. Our offense also came through against ACC and gave us enough run support to win comfortably.”

In the opening game, the Whitecaps took a 4-0 lead after the first two innings before the Dolphins got a run back in the sixth. GC added two more scores in the sixth to seal the victory, 6-1.

Whitecaps second baseman Samantha Gonzalez went 3-for-3 hitting lead off, scored twice and knocked in two runs in the first game, while GC center fielder Hannah Griffith went 2-for-2 with a solo home run.

In the nightcap, the home team scored all six of its runs in the first three innings to take 6-0 lead, which turned out to be the final score.

GC catcher Brooklyn Spencer went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs to lead the Whitecaps offensively in the second game.

The Whitecaps are off this weekend in preparation for a mid-week road trip to Angelina College on April 3. GC returns home for a non-conference doubleheader against Louisiana State University-Eunice on April 6 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Lassie League Complex, located at 2506 83rd St. in Galveston. Games are free and open to the public.
