As if on cue, Galveston College’s bats woke up in the final innings on Thursday as the Whitecaps rallied yet again, this time to defeat Florida Southwestern State College, 2-1, in the NJCAA DI World Series at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
In a pitchers duel that only saw one run in the first six innings, GC tied the game at 1-all in their last at-bats to force the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth frame, GC center fielder Hannah Griffith singled home the winning run, with shortstop Emily Parks crossing the plate to win the game, 2-1.
“What a wild series we’re having,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “Florida Southwestern has a very talented team, but our team never gives up and our sophomores don’t want to go home.”
Whitecaps freshman hurler Jenna Johnston pitched as good as any pitcher can throw in a national championship game. Johnston tossed eight complete innings, allowed only one run on six hits, and struck out two opposing batters to improve her record to 28-6 on the year.
With the victory, GC advance to the next round.
