What is the First Year Experience? 

Galveston College’s First Year Experience (FYE) program is designed to support new students as they transition into college life. We provide a range of services, resources, and opportunities to help you succeed academically, socially, and personally.

Through orientation, peer mentoring, engaging workshops, and specialized support, FYE will help you build connections, develop essential skills, and achieve your educational goals. Whether you're navigating your first semester or planning for the future, we’re here to ensure you thrive at Galveston College. Join us, and make your first year a success! 

Student Outcomes/Goals: 

By the end of the First Year Experience (FYE) program, students will: 

  • Improve Study Skills: Learn how to manage time, study better, and think critically to succeed in classes. 
  • Build Relationships: Make connections with other students, faculty, and staff to feel part of the college community. 
  • Know Campus Resources: Understand how to use helpful campus resources, like academic advising, tutoring, and financial aid. 
  • Gain Self-Awareness: Learn more about personal strengths and challenges to help navigate college life. 
  • Set Goals: Create both short-term and long-term educational and career goals, and learn how to reach them. 
  • Get Involved: Participate in college events, clubs, and activities to grow personally and socially. 
  • Take Responsibility: Learn to make smart decisions and use resources effectively to take charge of academic and personal growth. 
  • Understand College Life: Learn the rules, expectations, and culture of college, including classroom behavior and communication. 
  • Build Confidence: Become more confident in handling challenges and finding success in both school and personal life. 

If you’re new to Galveston College, or just starting classes, then Whitecaps Learning Communities are for you! 

We currently have learning communities tailored to students majoring in the Arts & Humanities pathway (i.e., General Studies-AA, Art, Drama/Theater, Criminal Justice, English, Health & Physical Education, History, Political Science/Government, Psychology, Sociology, or Speech Communication). Future learning communities are being planned for STEM, Business, and Education majors. 

Make an appointment with your Galveston College Academic Advisor. They can help determine if you’re eligible and find a Whitecaps Learning Community that’s right for your needs and schedule.  

First Year Experience offers many benefits to help students succeed during their first two semesters at Galveston College. These include: 

Learning Communities foster a collaborative and supportive environment that helps students achieve academic success, stay engaged, and develop both personally and professionally.  

Pathway Advising help connect students with academic planning, personal, and career development counseling. 

Early Registration for all GC classes to assist with enrolling in desired courses. 

Pathway and Career Workshops or Events to keep you engaged and focused during your first year.
