Students who choose to pursue an Associate of Arts in Speech Communication will take the basic core curriculum along with Introduction to Speech Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Business & Professional Communication, and Public Speaking. Upon completion of this degree plan, students will be well situated to transfer to most four-year colleges in Texas and elsewhere.

Most mid to large companies have communication professionals on staff to help the organization communicate effectively with internal and external audiences. These jobs include marketing communications, social and digital media, journalism, and health communication. Communication staff also conduct corporate training, and may act as a spokesperson for an organization. Advertising, public relations, corporate communications, education, law, politics, and many other careers have a foundation in the field of speech communications.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that media and communications professions will gain around 109,500 jobs in the United States each year with an average median wage of $66, 320.
The goal of the Speech Department at Galveston College is to help students become competent communicators. Speech is a practical field of study, and courses are designed to facilitate recognition of existing communication styles, improve communication skills, and then to transfer that knowledge into practical application. The program emphasizes the need to recognize and accommodate diversity in written and spoken forms of communication, and teaches students to use critical thinking skills to evaluate the receiver and context of the message, and then to adapt communication appropriately.
