Welding Technology

The Welding Technology Program at Galveston College is designed to provide hands-on training on the same equipment used by business and industry.  Students learn various welding processes including but not limited to shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and gas metal arc welding. Students learn to perform welding skills in all positions and are able to acquire knowledge and experience in welding, layout, and fitting skills in order to prepare students for careers in gas welding, arc welding, specialty welding, and/or other areas of welding.

The Welding Technology Program at Galveston College is designed to provide hands-on training on the same equipment used by business and industry. Students learn various welding processes including, but not limited to, oxyacetylene gas welding, gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and other processes. Students learn to perform welding skills in all positions and are able to acquire knowledge and experience in welding, layout, and fitting skills in order to prepare students for careers in gas welding, arc welding, specialty welding, and/or other areas of welding. Graduates should be qualified to pass entry-level certification tests as required by business and industry. Employment opportunities are available as a welder in general fabrication shops, on construction sites, in pressure vessel shops, or in the maritime industry and shipyards of the Texas Gulf Coast Region.

  • Identify proper safety equipment and tools.
  • Demonstrate basic shop safety.
  • Identify and explain object views, lines, and dimensions.
  • Calculate dimensions and material.
  • Read welding detail drawings.
  • Identify, explain, and interpret weld symbols.
  • Read and interpret blueprints.
  • Identify and select measuring instruments and tools for fabricating projects.
  • Recognize correct layout and fabrication terminology.
  • Interpret codes and standards.
  • Interpret welding symbols.
  • Demonstrate machine set-up and complete welds and cutting operations;
  • Perform SMAW,GTAW,FCAW-G and GMAW-S operations in various positions using selected electrodes and different joint designs.
  • Apply mathematical concepts in the construction of projects.
  • Describe effects of preheating and post-weld heating; explain precautions used when welding various metals and alloys; distinguish between qualification and certification procedures
  • Weld various joint designs and diagnose welding problems and perform visual inspection.

Equipment and books are required during the first week of class. Please contact the Welding Program Director for the current book and equipment list.

Graduates are qualified to pass entry-level certification tests as required by business and industry.  Employment opportunities are available as a welder in:

  • Construction sites
  • Pressure vessel shops
  • Maritime industry and shipyards of the Texas Gulf Coast Region
  • Petro-Chemical Industry

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be nearly 450,000 welding jobs available in 2017. The Welding Technology Program at Galveston College offers a certificate in basic welding skills as well as exit points for advanced and high technology skills in welding.
